The just concluded SS. Philip & James Catholic Choir Week was a mind blowing one.
Within the Lekki Axis, there is doubt if any parish choir comes up with such outstanding method of organizing hot but healthy music competition among the Parish choir.
In the formations and for the purpose of the competition, the general choir is divided into 3 different group of choirs with choristers assigned to the membership of these choirs ;The Dominions Choir, The Powers Choir and The Angels Choir.
Who doesn’t know that Lagos is a very busy city made up of basically working class and business people. The members of this choir happen to fall in the same category but yet give in a lot of time after work to prepare for the competition in their different groups.
This actually happens annually, but this year seems more classy. The groups were presented with competition songs and given the task of organizing themselves, learning their songs together and choosing their choirmasters among themselves .The different groups went out of their way to get costumes that suited their different music renditions.
The aim of the choir week remains the same annually- To fortify, enhance the growth and development of the parish choir as a body- musically, spiritually and for fun.
Funny enough, during the preparations, non of the groups wanted the other to know what they were doing and how they were preparing or even how ready they were for a any particular song. Every body seemed to be minding their different choirs, even friends were very careful on how they related to their friends in the other groups just in other not to leak what ever is their secret to winning the competition.
You know how people can score/ judge themselves at the end of an examination.., as an observer and participant, this became the case of the three groups which made the atmosphere so tensed. Members blamed each other for what they felt were their short comings in each of the songs. How.. whether they landed on key or not, whether they attacked the song as supposed to or not, whether the next person standing was singing louder or not, whether the choirmaster conducted well or not.
As for the grand leaders of the choir who were not part of the groups/competition due to official roles , such atmosphere was actually the best way to start the choir week.
The parish choir master as a leader actually knows the right way to paddle his boat. He didn’t fail to give his words of encouragement after day 3 (first day of music renditions) in other to set the minds of the choristers on higher morale for subsequent presentations.
Good evening brethren. I am incredibly proud of what you all did today. You all – each of the three choirs; Angels, Dominions, Powers – made a huge and clear statement about your presence and your knowledge of the songs. I saw some of you spending some time complaining about today. What you don’t realize is that you did many more things right than the few things you did wrong. Your dressing was great. Your comportment was great. Your singing was beautiful – the judges said so. The patron said so. The priest said so. You were simply great. There are areas where improvement would be great, but this night, these three choirs – Angels, Dominions, Powers – all of these choirs proved that we are now so much better than we used to be, and we may very well be the best Catholic choir on this axis. Please keep it up. Do not give up. Do not slow down. The mistakes that were made today were made by ALL choirs. Therefore, there is technically no advantage at this point. Tomorrow and next will make the difference. That said, I am incredibly proud of all of you. I have no words to tell you how much I love you, how proud I am of you. ”
The 4th day came and ended with renewed spirit following the judges commendations on the implementation of day 3 corrections. The three choirs seemed to be on point.
Just like the other days, on the last day of music rendition, the choir groups came up with different traditional costumes to suit their choice pieces. It was a glamouring night and wonderful concept.
Despite the fact that the 3 choirs gave in so much energy in their renditions, of course there must be one winner in the contest.
Without much margin from the other two choirs, The Powers Choir emerged Winner of the 2019 choir week Competition.
Powers Choir – 76. 0
Angels Choir – 75. 5
Dominions Choir – 74.
Margin of the three choirs 76,75 and 74 would go long way to tell how much growth the choir had made this far….well done choristers and special thanks to all the choir leaders.
Day 3- Power choir
It was an awesome experience
